I have a 2018 Defender Hd10 w/ 3400miles, s3 springs on 30”tires, and Torqlocker front locked. Last year on a trip I noticed the first day some moisture coming from the trans vent tube, but didn’t think a whole lot of it as I thought it may just be burning off excess moisture. On the second day we were hoping on the road, so I went to unlock the rear differential and started flying down the road and all of a sudden I started getting this horrible vibration in the rear. Pulled over and found both rear axle boots melted on the inner joints and so hot you couldn’t touch them; and the trans vent had moisture/steam coming from it again.
Got it home and checked to see that the rear end was disengaging/engaging fine in the air. No excessive metal when draining the oil and the oil looked normal. I replaced the axles with stock and installed new stock wheel bearings as well.
The unit seemed fine around the house and on a couple road rides, but I have noticed I sometimes would have to flip the rear differential switch a twice occasionally to get it to unlock(I would hear the actuator move, but it seemed to get hung up occasionally).
Recently went on a trip with a mix of trail and roads. This time I left the rear end locked the whole time. The first 60 miles it was fine, didn’t notice anything abnormal. The second day was normal in the beginning, then all of a sudden we were heading back on the road and they burnt up again!
I’ve split open the trans and cannot find anything that would cause excessive heat and no signs of overheating/blued parts. I am very confused as what is the cause of this issue, as I have had the machine since new and roughly 2k miles on it with the current springs&tires with no issues on trails/roads. Any advice helps!
