I just purchased a new HD10. It had about 10 hours on it from being the demo model. When I asked the sales guy if It needed a break in period, he said no. I took it home and ran it for 15-20 minutes including a couple full throttle runs. Now reading the manual I see it calls for a 100 hour break in protocol. What are the odds I messed up the engine?

In my opinion these engines are tuned down quite a bit, so, I'd say you are completely fine.

A full throttle run is part of the break in as long as you don't stay on it for a minute or two. IMO😉

Yeah, basically I hit the throttle a few times to feel out the acceleration/top speed. Probably fine but I'm a bit OCD with my stuff. Can't imagine a few 30 second bursts would hurt anything...

I'd be curious what percentage of these machines make it through the first 100hrs never going past 3/4 throttle.. and if the outcome changes at all.

Not likely, most of the skidoo/can am defenders probably have a bit of a limiter built in for the first few hours that reduces the chance of early damage.🙂

Did you notice a change in performance after the first hundred hours?

On skidoos mountain machines it was 2 tanks of fuel, on the defender it wasn't noticeable until I did a reflash from MFI.🙂

no changes here after break in, you are fine.  drive it how you want to, probably good to do a few high rpm runs and let it build compression in the cylinder.

Never did anything special with it once I bought it. Just drove it. 2000+ miles later, no issues. Did first oil change at 1000 miles, no filings or chunks, fairly clean oil.
