Hello, brand new to this site, and to purchasing a can am.

I'm in need of some advice on what I should expect or accept from my dealer.

On Sat 5/5/25 I traded in for a brand new old stock 2023 defender max hd7.  Once the finance paperwork was completed salesman informs me it will be a few minutes before I can load the machine and head home as they were changing the oil in the machine.  They had it for around a year and drove it in and out on the lot everyday and it had yet to be changed he explained.

I finally get it hauled the 2hrs home put it in the garage for 2 days due to weather not being fit to ride it. Monday comes and I'm finally able to take my kids about a 2 mile ride up the county road and back. Park it once again no issues.  The following day I decide to take the Defender to pick them up from their grandparents and let them get an actual ride in this time. All paved or gravel county roads 35-40mph tops. On our way home, oil light comes on, and display says to shut down the engine. I immediately let off the gas and ease to side of road, then check engine light appears and it shuts down.  I pull dipstick, some smoke is coming from the dipstick opening, and no oil on the stick. Then noticed some oil on next to motor on top of skidplate.

I eventually figure out the oil drain plug is missing, and discover an oil trail leading back nearly a mile.

Had a trailer come winch it up and now back at the dealership, haven't heard anything from them yet. 26.9mi and it's dead in the water.

I've never been in a spot like this before. What do you guys expect they will do about this? And what do you all feel would be acceptable if you were in my shoes?

Sorry for the long first post, just wanted to give a good illustration.

that is a dealer screw up and will cost them a new motor

Check your paperwork to see what it says about the warranty you got with the machine. It should still have the base warranty unless the dealer didn't register it correctly. Contact BRP care and start a claim with them.

The dealer should install a new short block as a minimum with oil and filter at his cost. The reason for the BRP care claim is to keep them in the loop with what the dealer plans to do.

Another option is to insist on a new machine with the same year and options and see if he can find one for you at his cost?

Ask for a full refund if the dealer doesn't have any exchange machines.

If the dealer replaces the engine with an new one ask for a five year extended warranty at his cost to protect you against any further shoddy workmanship. Good luck.🤑

Thanks for the responses, I felt like a new motor was justifiable at a minimum.  I just wanted some other opinions to be sure I wasn't out of line in my thinking.

Thanks again
